How To Develop A Positive “Model Mindset”
Today I want to talk to you about something that will be really important to your ultimate success as a model – the self talk running all the time inside your head.
This self talk is key to what you believe about yourself, and what you believe you can accomplish as a model (or anything else for that matter).
As I’ve said before, our thoughts lead to actions, and those actions lead to results. More exactly, good thoughts lead to good results and negative thoughts to negative results.
You see, your subconscious mind works all the time beneath the surface, and it believes what you tell it. And that’s true whether the message you’re sending is positive or negative. The subconscious mind doesn’t have the ability to reject what you feed it, it takes everything you put in as fact and then gets to work to bring it into reality.
You know, this idea of self-talk is so key to success and happiness, and yet so overlooked. We’re talking to ourselves all day long. Maybe that’s why we’re usually not even aware of it, because it is so constant.
But knowing that it is taking place most of our waking hours and being aware of just what it is we’re telling ourselves is vitally important. Because it’s what we say to ourselves enough times that is what we eventually come to believe.
Again, that’s true whether or not the message we’re telling ourselves is positive or negative. That being the case, doesn’t it make sense to choose only the positive?
Starting right now, today, I want you to start paying attention to how you speak to yourself on the inside. Stop and listen to the voice in your head. Is your voice supportive, encouraging and patient? Do you speak to yourself in the same way you would to your best friend? Because if you don’t, who will?
If you’re programming the wrong thoughts and beliefs in your mind, you’ve got to stop it at once and switch the message to a positive one. You need to banish thoughts like…
–Everyone else is (you fill in the blank here): taller, thinner, younger, better-looking, working more, etc. than I am.
–Out of all these models, why would they choose me?
–This could never work out. Who am I kidding?
–The client didn’t like me, I can tell.
–I’ve either got to take drugs, starve myself or sleep with someone if I want to make it in this business.
And the negative self-talk that has probably caused more people to hold themselves back than any other:
–What if I fail?
If you find you’re saying any of these kinds of things to yourself, you have to stop right now, this minute. Your self-image and therefore your success depend upon it.
A POSITIVE TECHNIQUE TO BANISH NEGATIVE SELF-TALK
So here’s a simple and effective technique you can use to stop negative thoughts in their tracks. Consciously replace each negative thought with it’s polar opposite.
So instead of asking “What happens if I fail?” ask yourself instead, “What if I succeed?”
If you catch yourself saying, “Out of all these models, why would they choose me?” answer yourself, “No one else on the planet has exactly what I have to offer.”
And if the voice in your head says “This could never work out. Who am I kidding?” say instead, “We’re never given a dream without the power to make it come true.”
Make it a regular habit to listen to the voice in your head, and don’t hesitate to substitute positive thoughts whenever you hear negative ones. You have the power to do so.
The faster you adopt this habit, the sooner you’ll start to see the positive results you’re hoping to find, whether in modeling or in other areas of your life. Apply this technique consistently and watch what happens!
